Are Therapists to Blame for Estrangement?

Fox News ran a segment this week on a Wall Street Journal piece asking whether therapists are behind the rise in adult children cutting off their parents. The Journal reports that some therapists now recommend no contact as a form of self-care, and that adult children are going no contact because a therapist told them to. That does happen.

But the same reporting quietly shows why it matters so much. Their lead example is a woman who cut off her mother on her therapist’s say-so, lost years to it, and eventually picked up the phone. Her mother had been waiting the whole time. That door was never closed. It only looked that way, and nobody ever gave her a way to tell the difference.

That’s the actual problem. Not who gave the advice, but that people are making permanent decisions about relationships that were never permanently broken.

The Space in the Middle is a formula for telling which one you’re in. Some doors are closed forever. Some only look that way. Available On Amazon, Barnes & Noble and wherever books are sold.
